An absurd story reflecting contemporary social problems in Ukraine, told in the century-old language of cinema, linking modernity and traditional Soviet socialist realism. Classical imagery imitates an old ideology contradicting the author’s worldview revealing the roots of reality’s distortion in this post-Soviet ambience showing that cultural, political and economic problems are knotted in military conflict.
In the 1st season of the series "Probationary Love", the 35-year-old widower spends a lot of time in the apiary, which feeds his family. Because of this, eight-year-old Lucy and four-year-old Petya are completely abandoned. The guardianship authorities threaten to take the babies away. In order not to send the children to a boarding school, Pavel publishes an ad in the newspaper that he is looking for a wife who wants to help him with the kids. So the librarian Natalia appears in the man's house. The main character still has not recovered from the death of his wife and hardly accepts another woman in the house. The children are jealous of Natasha's father. It is difficult for a woman to be in this tense atmosphere.
The first film in a trilogy about the Soviet-Ukrainian war of the early twentieth century. The film is about the fate of two young men who volunteered to defend Ukraine and were almost immediately captured by the Reds. It is about loyalty to ideals and unscrupulousness. The film perfectly captures the atmosphere of those times, especially noticeable among the local population, this typical Ukrainian farming "my house is on the edge" attitude. As the director said, he didn't try to figure out who was right and who was wrong, so there are no unambiguously good or bad characters in the film, neither among the Red Army nor among the Petliura members. Among the disadvantages are some sound synchronization and sometimes unreliable acting, but the plot is as engaging as any story about the difficult fate of Ukrainians. The plot is quite predictable, but it is no less interesting in its performance.
